This morning, Dive Into Culture on anincluded sightseeing tour with a Local Specialist at the Vatican Museums. Admire the works of great masters, the magnificent frescoed ceiling in the Sistine Chapel and the sorrowful Pietà inside St. Peter’s Basilica. Later, explore the labyrinth of narrow streets and wide open piazzas of central Rome with a Local Specialist. Discover a lively hub of Roman life at the Campo dei Fiori marketplace before the spectacle of the Piazza Navona opens before you. This stunning oval-shaped piazza maintains the form of its original purpose as a Roman athletics track. Today it is flanked by cafés and restaurant enjoying views of its centerpiece, Bernini’s famous Quattro Fiumi fountain. A short stroll away is the Pantheon, the best-preserved of all Roman monuments in the city. Your guide then leads you across the Via del Corso to the world-famous Trevi Fountain. Be sure to throw in a coin to ensure your return to Rome one day! Finally, climb to the top of the famous Spanish Steps which rewards you with stunning views over the hills of Rome and dome of St Peter’s (Rome walking tour is approximately 2.5-3 hours long).
Day 4 | Mon, Oct 18, 2022 | Imperial Rome
Today’s experiences will leave you in awe as your Local Specialist shows you the heart of the Roman Empire. Marvel at the imposing Colosseum, commissioned by Emperor Vespasian. The stadium accommodated up to 50,000 spectators who came to view the gladiatorial battles that sometimes lasted up to one-hundred days! Adjacent is the Arc of Constantine; dating from AD 315, it is a forerunner to many other Triumphal Arches around the world. Next, discover the excavations of the vast Roman Forum, where remains of temples, streetscapes and palaces can be appreciated up close. Your guide helps brings to life the atmosphere of Rome’s pulsating heart and also explains the other nearby Emperor Forums; Trajan, Augustus and Caesar. Finally, discover the Palatine Hill, inhabited since the ninth century BC; archaeologists believe this to be the place where Romulus, founder of Rome, lived.
Day 5 | Tue, Oct 19, 2022| Tivoli
Travel with your Local Specialist a short way out of Rome, past the white quarries whose white marble can be seen throughout the city of Rome. Your destination today is the world-famous UNESCO-listed Villa d’Este, the palatial villa of the powerful Cardinal Ippoloto d’Este from the 16th century. Designed as a monument to power and excess, its construction involved demolishing a monastery and diverting an entire river to feed the 80 tumbling fountains in the gardens. Whilst the interior is hugely impressive, the stupendous gardens are an phenomenal example of Italianate gardens, much copied in noble and regal palaces across Europe. In the afternoon, continue to Hadrian’s Villa, which was built during the 2nd century AD. Tantalizing glimpses of underground service passageways large enough to accommodate vehicles can be seen in this gargantuan complex, which incorporates lakes, fountains, libraries, baths, temples and gardens. Explore the remains of the complex during your visit today, and admire the stunning position of the great emperor’s former ‘holiday home’.
Day 6 | Wed, Oct 20, 2022 | Pompeii
Travel outside Rome today on your full-day excursion to Pompeii, where you join your Local Specialist on a walking tour of this once opulent town. The extensive and varied ruins of Pompeii now provide us with a rich history of life at the time of the Roman Empire. Destroyed by the Mount Vesuvius eruption in 79 BC, this dugout treasure represents an amazing day trip for children and adults alike. On view are temples, forums, amphitheaters, a brothel and the casts of the people killed by the falling ash and pumice stone. Pompeii offers an unparalleled window into the quotidian life of classical antiquity. After your visit, you are transferred back to your hotel in Rome.
Day 7 | Thu, Oct 21, 2022 | Rome at Leisure
Spend another day enjoying Rome at your own pace. Stroll to the boutiques of the Via del Corso and Via Nazionale or visit the elegant designer stores near the Spanish Steps.
